A "top of the range" spiral staircase kit, and also one of our most popular models, the C20 is one of our best buys. The reason it is so popular is simple; it has a top specification and an excellent build quality and it costs a lot less than other models with a similar specification. For example the treads and landing plate are made from a type of hardwood called beech – just like most other kit stairs. However, the C20 uses a grade of wood known as “1st choice”. This means that only the best pieces of wood are used to so that there are very few knots or imperfections in them. They are protected with at least two coats of a tough polyurethane varnish for a great looking finish that will last a long time. Another example of the superior build quality is that the small connectors that join the balusters to the handrail are stainless steel rather than cheap plastic. It is lots of small touches like these which really set the C20 spiral staircase kit apart from most other kit spiral stairs.

The C20 comes in three standard diameters and it can be adjusted to suit the height of most houses. The C20 can also be specially made to other non standard sizes should you have a particular requirement. For more information about the sizes of the standard model please read the height and layout tab. Otherwise the most common queries about the C20 spiral staircase kit are:

What comes in the box?

A landing plate and brackets to fix it to the upper floor

A centre pole and base plate

Treads

Tread spacers

Balusters

Handrail

Written installation instructions

What are the main parts made from?

The landing plate and treads are made from beech (a good quality hardwood). They have been factory finished with two coats of a tough polyurethane varnish. This can either be a clear varnish or varnish mixed with a dark stain.

The balusters and tread spacing tubes are made from steel. They are powder coated and coloured either white, grey or black.

The handrail is made from PVC and has is the same colour as the balusters and tread spacing tubes.

How is the delivery made?

The C20 spiral staircase is supplied in kit form. It is shipped in a large cardboard box on a wooden pallet and depending on the number of treads ordered there may be a few smaller cardboard boxes as well. The delivery is made using a large vehicle with a tail lift and a pump truck because the main box is too heavy to be lifted by hand. The driver will take the goods off the lorry and deliver them to the roadside outside your property, or as close as possible if you live on an unmade road. From there you will need to provide the means of bringing them into the building. If you need to do this by hand you can do so only by opening the box and carrying in the pieces inside. It is not possible to move the complete box by hand as it will weigh at least 150kg.

How can I tell if it will fit my house?

You need to take a few measurements and then carefully read the information we give on heights and layout and fixings. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call our technical sales team on 0800 098 8778. We're here to help!

Will my new staircase meet building regulations?

Approved Document K from the Building Regulations refers to British Standard 5395 1984 part 2 for guidance on the design of spiral staircases. Essentially the standard gives different requirements depending on where a spiral staircase is going to be used. For example the requirements for a staircase in a private house are different to those for a staircase in a public place. Even within a house the requirements can change because a staircase up to a small loft conversion can be smaller and steeper than a staircase going from ground to first floor in a family house. If your installation needs to comply with building regulations then you need to find out which category of spiral staircase is right for your situation (ask Building Control). Providing you buy the 1600mm diameter model, and you assemble it so that the rise per step is less than 220mm, the C20 will meet the requirements of a category A or "Small Private" stair. It is your responsibility to determine whether or not this will meet your requirements.

Will my new staircase meet building regulations?

The short answer to this question is no - the T20 does not meet the requirements of Approved Document K from the Building Regulations as a suitable means of access to a habitable space. That's because the T20 is not really an alternative to a conventional staircase. It's for use in spaces that are so small that the only alternative is a ladder. Of course the T20 is much safer and more comfortable to use than a ladder! If your installation needs to comply with the Building Regulations then you need to use a different type of staircase. Please contact our technical sales team on 0800 098 8778 if you need help. Remember that it's your responsibility to determine whether or not your installation is subject to the Building Regulations.
